The last voyage of the Kaga by Jacklionheart The last voyage of the Kaga by Jacklionheart
When i was a child, i loved to build modelkits of ships and planes. But it was the artwork on the box top, that really excited me. Those artworks were done by artists like John Steel, Jack Leynnwood or Roy Cross and all those years, they still impress me.

My painting is a homage to all those great artists. It shows the IJN Kaga, a heavy aircraft carrier of the imperial Japanese navy on her last voyage in 1942. At first light, she is heading trough heavy seas of the pacific towards Midway island, where she will meet her fate.

I spend hours and hours of research to get the technical details right, but the most challenge became the waves, which I have overpainted a couple of times until i was satisfied.

Photoshop, no cheats, no texture, no 3D...just painting.

"edit" I resubmitted the print for a larger size and better contrast."

Finally faved this piece as it is about as historically accurate as one can get imho. Really great job on capturing the dynamism of the ocean. One quick question. It looks like there is a flight of B-25 Mitchells ahead of the Kaga and if I am correct is there a particular reason behind this as there were no B-25s involved at Midway. Thanks. :)

Thank you so much, very kind. The planes are Japanese Mitsubishe G3m, they have a tail which is similar to the B-25 or Lancaster, but they are much sleeker than a Mitchel. Kind regards, Jack

The waves are the most impressive part, great job. The hours of dedication you gave this are clear.

Thank you so much! There is always a bit of insanity when painting so much detail ;-)
