The last voyage of the Kaga by Jacklionheart The last voyage of the Kaga by Jacklionheart
When i was a child, i loved to build modelkits of ships and planes. But it was the artwork on the box top, that really excited me. Those artworks were done by artists like John Steel, Jack Leynnwood or Roy Cross and all those years, they still impress me.

My painting is a homage to all those great artists. It shows the IJN Kaga, a heavy aircraft carrier of the imperial Japanese navy on her last voyage in 1942. At first light, she is heading trough heavy seas of the pacific towards Midway island, where she will meet her fate.

I spend hours and hours of research to get the technical details right, but the most challenge became the waves, which I have overpainted a couple of times until i was satisfied.

Photoshop, no cheats, no texture, no 3D...just painting.

"edit" I resubmitted the print for a larger size and better contrast."

Wow, the ship looks so real, your painting skills are really incredible. The Kaga kinda reminds me of the Cape Island and Cape Intrepid, two navy ships that are moored in Tacoma near where I live. It's crazy to think that one day those ships might be sunk in war. I hope that never happens.

Amazing. That is FAR than what I can do as well as many others. For me, art pieces tell a story, well usually. And this one has great meaning and I can tell you put forth much effort considering all the tiny details that matters a lot. It's astonishing

It always got me the way the Japanese carriers were so much more open than the American carriers.  Not that it really made much difference to their performance though.

Great work on the details here. The sea, & the ship also. The only thing I'd mention is the ship looks a little flat rather than disappearing into the distance. I'm not sure which would suit better either less detail to the front end or pushing it back value wise? Other than that Well done!

very nice work and that details level, just wow and it seems it has some story in, that makes it live, (idk but did you tried add some small people on ship) i wanted to write that but then i saw some people it took me a while to see them maybe adding people in contrast would make them more visible

My only suggestion would be related to how distance could be better suggested near the orizon in the middle right side of the image. I think that even some lighter tones would do the job.

Wow; This is absolutely amazing. It is so realistic, and the detail of the ships is wondrous. The streaks of rust really just pull you in.
And the waves are definitely the highlight for me. Not only is it the fact that they look so real, but also you did an great job forming them around the ships, showing a real eye for physics & pull.

   Beautiful work.
