This is a digital matte painting for the independent movie Nydenion. [link]
To get more painting practice I tried to stay away from textures, brush voodoo and copy and pasting as much as I could. There also was no CG model involved, everything is painted with the help of perspective lines.
This was pretty hard as it expanded the time for painting very, but at the same time it gave me a lot of practice and I felt like time travelling to the good old glass shot matte painting days.
The original file is 5000x2529 at 300dpi, so there's a lot of detail in it, which made it not easier for me as I have fallen in love with this whole greeble stuff
We will add some air traffic and people on the plattforms, I will post a note when we have a finished comp.
I must admit I thought a 3D base render was used here too, or at least some photo's (ignoring the sky, since this was obviously a practice in cities and the sky which can likely do well anyway would have just added unnecessary time to it) Looks great though, would have been a killer to paint everything from scratch but it makes the piece more "valuable" I think, if not for matte painting than just for artistic value at least.
What I find hardest is just "coming up" with buildings in the first place, I'm sure I could shade and detail provided ones (maybe not to this extent though) but drawing up my own futuristic architecture is the hardest thing, I probably just don't "get" what constitutes to drawing plausible future buildings and vehicles

Thank you mate. You know for me it basicaly was a practice thing. I could have been 10 times faster with a rendering but that was not my goal. I've seen a lot of "classic" matte paintings on glass which didn't look authentic, but they look some kind of nice. Even in our digital days the 100 percent realistic FX is still hard to get.
Regarding Design, I got a great deal of inspiration from books like "Art of Judge Dredd", and I have a pretty large collection of concept art and mattepainting on my HD. You are right it is hard to come up with designs of techical "working" shapes of future technology. I often do all the things that I like in a pot and scramble it, often I will get something new...I also love inspirations from vintage crafts and prototypes...people forget about things very fast....wait 20 years and you can make a remake
Yeah, I know how you feel about the need to paint something from scratch once in a while. I like using 3D models most of the time since it can be convenient, but once in a while it's good to sharpen your skills and do one with no 3D or photo's used
Ahh, so like many even the pro's use references and inspiration I always thought there was some "knack" to designing buildings and vehicles that actually look functional (I suppose it does matter more for spaceships etc) that I may have been lacking, but it's reassuring to hear others also say they seek inspiration elsewhere

In theory there is no difference between theory and practice; but in practise there is Henry ford
